PhD Project

The effects of governmentally enforced minimum wages on formal sector employment

(The research project is part of ADAPTED, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network project funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme which is coordinated by the IEE.)

Based on the growth model for partially formalised economies, the PhD project will model and empirically test the transmission channels between minimum wages and formal sector job creation/employment and between formal sector job creation, economic growth and poverty reduction. Empirical testing will be based on panel data from SSA countries as well as on a case study from Ethiopia using time series. In the context of the case study, the PhD project will in addition carry out a labour survey to determine the employment status of the surveyed workers, distinguishing between employment in the formal sector and in the shadow economy, and informal employment.
