Petronilla she worked with non-profit, public, and private organizations, most recently the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), UN-Habitat, and the Central Bank of Kenya. She has a masters in Public Management (Public Policy and Administration) from Potsdam University, Germany, and a bachelor's in Actuarial Science from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Kenya. Her research interests have been on the political economy of regionalism in Africa, food systems transformation, land governance, urban innovation, investment promotion, and foreign direct investment policies.

Her PhD reseach "Neopatrimonialism, pockets of effectiveness and policy making for the poor" is part of the European Joint Doctorate “ADAPTED” (ERADICATING POVERTY: PATHWAYS TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE SDGS) which is funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 956909 and coordinated by the IEE. She is jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Wil Hout (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), Netherlands) and Prof. Dr. Christof Hartmann (University Duisburg-Essen, Associated Member of IEE).
