From 6 January to 31 March, Jasmin Fritzsche-El Shewy stayed as a Visiting Fellow at the School of Law at the University of Warwick, UK.

Raffael Beier participated in the workshop of the GELULE Project on processes of urbanization in Morocco held from 30 January to 02 February in Saint-Etienne, France. At the workshop he held a presentation on “De la ville vers le désert – Recasement des bidonvilles à Casablanca”.

On 29 January, Christina Seeger participated in the meeting of the Urban Food Plus research consortium held at the University of Kassel, Witzenhausen, Germany.

On invitation from alsharq e.V., Raffael Beier gave a presentation on urban development in Casablanca under the German title "Zwischen globalen Ambitionen und lokaler Dringlichkeit - Casablancas Urban Renewal" at a workshop held in Berlin from 5 to 7 February.

On invitation from Deutsch-Maghrebinische Gesellschaft e.V. and Volkshochschule Bonn Raffael Beier gave a presentation titled "Zwischen Rebellion und Global City - Partizipative Stadtentwicklung im Maghreb" in Bonn on 21 February.

Funded by the RUB Research School, Anne Siebert spent a field research stay at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, and the University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana, Field Research, from 25 February to 9 April. She shares more details on her stay in this newsletter article.

From 5 to 18 March, Christina Seeger participated and presented research results at the Technical Workshop and Stakeholder Dialogue of the Urban Food Plus research project in Tamale, Ghana. She reports on this event in this newsletter article.

In the context of the Urban Food Plus project, Tobias Thürer visited Bamako, Mali, for a research stay from 8 to 19 March.

From 9 to 10 March, Robin Pass visited the Institute of Public Health at the University Heidelberg to hand over the coordination of the AGEP-Network to a new colleague. Robin looks back on the activities during his time as coordinator of the AGEP-Network and the handover of his role in this newsletter article.

From 18 to 21 March, Wilhelm Löwenstein, Gabriele Bäcker, Britta Niklas, and Bettina Löwenstein visited Gordon’s Bay, South Africa, for the Final Meeting of the "EUSA_ID" project. Britta Niklas shares some further impressions from the event in this newsletter article. In addition, Gabriele Bäcker joined from 22 to 23 March a meeting of the Erasmus+ project „Enhancing Postgraduate Education“ and did institutional visits at Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape. Britta Niklas stayed from 22 to 26 March in Cape Town for meetings related to the coordination of the South African-German Centre for Development Research at the University of the Western Cape and for discussing joint research options with the Agricultural Economics Department of Stellenbosch University.

From 19 March to 19 May, Raffael Beier stayed at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands, for a research stay in the context of the joint PhD programme. Raffael reports more details about the joint PhD programme in this newsletter article.

On 20 March, Johannes Norpoth participated in a discussion event themed “Business Enterprises Bear Responsibility”, organized by the Institute of Church and Society of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.

Darina Pellowska, Ph.D. candidate at the IEE, participated in the 3rd NEEDS (Northern European Conference on Emergency and Disaster Studies) Conference in Amsterdam, March 21-23. She participated in the Panel "Aidnography - The Everyday Practices of Humanitarian Assistance" and presented her paper "Towards Conceptualizing Humanitarian Aid Diversion – A Social Network Approach".

From 4 to 6 April, Elkhan Sadik-Zada attended the International Conference on "Environmental Economics: a focus on Natural Resources" at the University of Orléans, France. At the conference he held two presentations, of which the first was on “Autocratic bargaining and the speed of structural change in the labour surplus economies” and the second explored “Revenue distribution patterns and rent-seeking incentive”.

On 13 April, Laura Hofmann attended the 2018 Lawyers' Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation Conference that convened on the theme of “Conversations on Hard Topics” at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.

From 27 to 28 April, Johannes Norpoth attended the international workshop "5 Years After Rana Plaza: Consequences for Labor Standards", held at the Free University of Berlin at the Faculty of Business and Economics. At the workshop, Johannes, together with Christian Scheper from the Institute of Development and Peace at the University of Duisburg-Essen, presented a co-authored paper on “Qualifying Legal Force in Transnational Labour Regulation: The Case of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh”.

From 1 May to 30 June, Anne Siebert stayed at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands, for a research stay in the context of the Joint PhD Programme.

In the context of the start of the new intake of the MADM in Cape Town, MADM coordinator Tobias Thürer visited the University of the Western Cape, Belville, Cape Town, from 2 to 11 May 2018 to welcome the new students and conduct the first course, “Economic Tutorial”. From 11 to 27 May, IEE Managing Director Wilhelm Löwenstein joined to teach the course on “Theories of Development and Underdevelopment – Economic Perspectives”.

On 9 May, Jasmin Fritzsche-El Shewy presented her paper ‘Displaced ‘Non-Citizens’ Trapped In-Between Spaces: A Spatial Reading of International Refugee Law’ at the First International Graduate Student Conference in the Social Sciences ‘Towards Anti-Hegemonic Knowledge Paradigms: Space, Place, Mobility and Power’ at Birzeit University, Palestine.
