MA Development Management: Summer School in Cape Town

A report on the MADM summer school in Cape Town 2019 from MADM Coordinator Tobias

In January 2019, as part of the MA Development Management (MADM) programme, a 4-week summer school was held in Cape Town at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). 16 students of the programme’s Bochum group travelled to Cape Town to meet with their 12 fellow students of the Cape Town group. Together, the students performed and attended a number of courses, lectures, excursions, and field visits over the course of the summer school. Starting with the course “How to conduct a field survey”, the students learned how to design a survey questionnaire, ran a survey in Cape Town, and processed their gathered data in in a following practicum. This opportunity was surely a training they will capitalize on when preparing and conducting field research in their master research projects.

The practical sphere of development was also addressed. Students visited projects in the township of Khayelitsha and Khayamnadi, and were able to discuss topics of interest with practitioners on site. After that, the students attended a series of lectures of UWC professors dealing with diverse development topics, e.g. on “Poverty and Inequality” and “Migration and Development”, and “Public Policy Reform in Africa”.

But aside from being a worthwhile educational experience, many nice side aspects of the summer school were also enjoyed. For instance, the students went on two excursions for sightseeing in and around Cape Town, letting them soak up the sun and take a break from the dreary, German winter.
