Research Clusters

Britta Niklas provides us with an overview on what happened in the Research Clusters recently

Just as the IEE staff, our PhD students are still working from home, making Research Cluster meetings a welcome opportunity to meet. The Cluster meetings do not only provide options for giving oral status updates on theses, but for presenting the most recent progress/results to a broader audience. The same option holds for guest researchers, who can present their work and get useful comments from cluster members who are familiar with the presenter’s topics.

In Cluster 1 (Globalization, Regional Integration and Governance), guest researcher Boaventura Monjane gave a presentation on his post-doctoral research on "Agrarian Neoliberalism, Authoritarianism and Political Reactions from below in Southern Africa" (see related article in our newsletter). In Cluster 2 (The Effectiveness of Interventions and Policies for Development), Britta Holzberg presented on "What Makes a Workplace Decent? Global standards meet local perspectives in Egypt and Jordan"; and in Cluster 3 (Resource Use and Distribution), Andrew Boogards gave a presentation on his new research with the working title "Rural Community Economic Development in Southern Guyana during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An examination of how social distancing policies and travel restriction are impacting economic linkages between Indigenous communities and the mining sector in the Deep South Rupununi".
