MADM: Meet, and greet, and study

At the MADM summer school in Bochum MADM students from Cape Town and Bochum met for the first time.

The Summer School of the Master of Arts in Development Management (MADM) was inaugurated in Bochum on 15 September 2014. For 25 students the Summer School marked the starting point for their participation at the MADM programme at the Ruhr-University Bochum. During the summer school, these 25 students were accompanied by the 12 students from the Cape Town group who had started their studies in the MADM programme at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in May 2014 already. In total, 37 students from 21 different countries spent four weeks together, studying the methodologies of social science research, joining a seminar on intercultural awareness and communication as well as meeting professionals from diverse German development organisations.

Last but not least, they travelled to Berlin for four days, visiting – among other activities – the Reichstag and the Bundesrat; and they also went to Bonn for visits to the UN Campus and the Haus der deutschen Geschichte. These academic and cultural activities were accompanied by diverse social events arranged in order to allow the students to get to know each other.
After the Summer School, the students of the Cape Town group started their internship period, where the students had the opportunity to gain some practical experience in the development sector, primarily in organisations based in Germany. The students of the Bochum group continued their studies and are currently spending their first semester in Bochum. At the beginning of next year, both groups will reunite in Cape Town, where the second Summer School of the two programmes will take place. The programme of the summer school comprises diverse courses. Thus, a course will be offered to students aimed at dealing with the proper preparation and realisation of their planned field research. This stay will also give them the opportunity to meet South African practitioners of the development sector.
