External Activities of IEE Members

From 22 November to 28 November, Raffael Beier presented the results of his current research in the workshop “Urban Space and the Common Good” in Rabat, Morocco.

Britta Niklas took part of in the networking workshop “Organic Wine Research” at University Bordeaux, France from 29 November to 3 December.

Prof. Dr. Löwenstein and Christina Seeger attended the “GlobE Pan-African Conference” which took place in Naivasha, Kenya, from 3 December to 4 December. They both moderated together a Science-Development Dialogue on the topic “New technologies for improved food security and food safety: Welfare impacts, adoption potential, and how to deal with adoption barriers”. Additionally, Christina Seeger presented a poster on the topic: “Economic Valuation of food quality improvements in West African Cities: A comparative analysis of Tamale, Ouagadougou, and Bamenda”.

In the period from 6 December to 7 December, Prof. Dr. Löwenstein and Nicole Dittrich visited the Eggerton University in Nakuru, Kenya, to participate in the final Urban Food Plus workshop, to discuss research results.

Dr. Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada, Henrike Roth and Nicole Dittrich were in Cape Town, South Africa at the University of Western Cape for teaching and supervision of the MADM students from 4 January to 24 January.

Prof. Dr. Löwenstein, Dr. Gabriele Bäcker and Britta Niklas were in Cape Town, South Africa for the “European Joint Doctorate” meeting from 6 January to 10 January.

From 11 February to 12 February, Raffael Beier visited the Université Diderot in Paris, France to discuss a book project with co-publishers.

Prof. Dr. Löwenstein taught the course “Economic Evaluation Methods” at the University of Western Cape from 8 February to 24 February in Cape Town, South Africa.

From 15 February to 15 March, Ruth Knoblich travelled to Indonesia in order to conduct expert interviews in the frame of the DFG- research project “Comparing social health protection systems from a Human-rights based approach" by Prof. Dr. Markus Kaltenborn.

On 19 March Dr. Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada presented his paper "Hotelling rule in the settings with heterogenous interest rates" at the 5th Roundtable. State, Law, Society: Current Problems and Development Trends. Poltava Oil and Gas College of the Poltava National Technical  Yuri Kondratyuk University, Ukraine.

On 21 February, Britta Niklas attended the alumni meeting of the DAAD African Excellence Centers at DAAD in Bonn, Germany.

Julien Lebourg and Raffael Beier taught the course “Qualitative Research Methods” at the University of Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa from 22 February to 11 March.

On 28 February Dr. Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada presented his paper “Assessment of the Threshold for the Economic Policy Improvement in the Rentier States” at the Renewable Energy in the SDGs Workshop, which took place at the University Groningen, Netherlands.

From 1 March to 31 March, Anne Siebert was on a research stay at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands.

Prof. Dr. Löwenstein presented at the European Development Finance Institution Impact conference in Brussels from 4 March to 5 March.

From 6 March to 7 March, Britta Niklas attended the DAAD workshop "Digitalisation of the DAAD African Excellence Centers” at DAAD in Bonn, Germany.

Our research fellow Timeela Manandhar was in Cape Town, South Africa at the University of Western Cape for supervision and teaching the MADM students the course “Law and Development” from 8 March to 20 March.

The course “Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation” was taught by Britta Niklas at the University of Western Cape from 23 March to 7 April, Cape Town, South Africa.

From 26 March to 28 March Prof. Dr. Löwenstein took part in the EIB conference in Luxemburg.

Ruth Knoblich participated in a workshop on "Preferences, attitudes and environmental impact of the new middle classes" at the German Development Institute Bonn on April 4.

Our research fellow Raffael Beier was at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands on 5 April to defend his PhD Thesis.

Dr. Gabriele Bäcker supervised and taught the course “Financial Management” and “Eonomic Reforms, Income, and Poverty” at the University of Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa from 7 April to 19 April.

On 11 and 12 April, Anne Siebert attended the 24 hours workshop “SPIELRAUM – Shaping Urban Transformation” of the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Cologne. Anne and her team convinced the audience and received a research grant for the prototyping phase of their project on peri-urban food systems.

Tobias Thürer participated the workshop “Entwicklungspolitische Diskurse (Nr.6): Der Wald als Lebensraum“ at the Gustav Stresemann Institut in Bonn, Germany from 12 April to 13 April.

From 21 April to 28 April Christina Seeger visited the University of Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa to teach the course “Economic Reforms, Income, and Poverty” together with Dr. Bäcker.

On 28 April, Anne Siebert organised and attended a reading session on „Agrarian Transformation, Citizenship, and Metabolic Rift” with Prof. Dr. Hannah Wittman (Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, University of British Columbia, Canada) at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague, Netherlands.
