South African-German Centre for Development Research

Britta Niklas welcomes three new scholarship holders, informs about a new call for MA scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships, and reports on the DIGI-FACE (virtual) kick-off

Welcome to three new scholarship holders

Despite of the difficult situation with UWC still running in online mode, three new scholarship holders arrived at the SA-GER CDR between February and May 2021 and commenced their studies. They were selected out of 470 applicants and we hope that they will be able to enter the UWC Campus for lectures in person soon. Olutomiwa Binuyo is undertaking a PhD in Development Studies, and Boitumelo Mngomezulu and Hileleule Getachew are enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration program. We wish them a good start and a successful time!

New Call for MA scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships at the SA-GER CDR

MA scholarship applications are open until 30 June 2021 and are currently published on the website of the SA-GER CDR. For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record, the Centre offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships for both the Masters in Development Studies and the Master in Public Administration.

Additionally, there is an open call with several deadlines throughout 2021 for postdoctoral fellowships, only intended for former DAAD scholarship holders of the Centre. More information on both Calls can be found on the website: www.cdr-sa.org

DIGI-FACE virtual kick-off

The DAAD’s “Digital Initiative for African Centres of Excellence” (DIGI-FACE) wants to establish digital teaching and learning structures that are adapted to the local context. These will be used to develop cross-curricular courses for students and alumni, and to offer skills training for lecturers to improve their competencies. In the long run, the project also aims to strengthen regional research capacities, allowing for joint inter- and trans-disciplinary research activities at the Centres of African Excellence.

As the set-up of the DIGI-FACE platform needs close cooperation of all Centres, Britta Niklas and Ruth Knoblich of the SA-GER CDR took part in the kick-off meeting, held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The platform will be launched in late summer this year and then more information and the respective links will be available at the SA-GER CDR website: www.cdr-sa.org
