IEE Newsletter No. 34

Editorial

Dear Reader,

With Christmas time coming closer and the end of the year approaching, it is time to look back at the last months, highlight some events, and take a sneak peek at the coming year, 2022.

After a long period of working from home, the IEE started in late summer to come back to the office part-time. This was especially useful for the start of the new EU-funded European Joint Doctorate, “ADAPTED”. Here, we could welcome four PhD students as new collogues at the IEE. We are happy to give you more information about the start of the ADPATED program in our Newsletter.

Both groups of the MADM students, the Bochum and the Cape Town group, had to stay in Bochum for their second semester due to the COVID-19 crisis, and most of the classes had to take place online. However, we are happy to report that nearly all of the students were able to participate in field research during the summer time to collect their primary data. In November, the MADM students came back to Bochum to write their master thesis during their final semester. Despite his busy schedule, one of the students, Setonji Ogunbiyi, was nominated for the “German goal of the month”, which made him and the MADM program popular - at least among those 300.000 people who voted for him.

Several members of the IEE team took part in the Research Fair of the DAAD Centres of African Excellence, and work from the IEE took the spotlight in the RUB magazine Rubin, whose current edition focused on RUB researchers working on projects related to the Sustainable Development Goals. We are also happy to welcome two more new colleagues who will support our MADM and ADAPTED programs (see new faces).

In the upcoming year, the IEE will host the ADAPTED mid-term meeting and hopes to start new projects related to the “Roundtable Africa” initiative of the German Government in 2022.

From all of us at the IEE, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein
