New European Joint Doctorate Programme ADAPTED will start in 2021

The IEE as coordinator has successfully submitted a proposal for the implementation of a European Joint Doctorate (EJD) on the topic "Eradicating Poverty: Pathways towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals" (ADAPTED). The proposal has been evaluated within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020) and reached a top result of 98%.

With a funding volume of 3.9 m. Euro, ADAPTED has a duration of four years and will start in February 2021. 15 PhD researchers will join the IEE and our partner institutions in Europe (International Institute for Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Kooijmans Institute for Law and Governance of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Department of Economics, Boğaziçi University, and Centre d'économie de la Sorbonne, Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne) in autumn next year. Additional partners are the Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungs-GmbH, Agence Française de Dévelopement, Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations, European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes, and six universities from five African countries.

RUB Management visited SA-GER CDR

Accompanied by DAAD’s Secretary General Dr. Dorothea Rüland, RUB’s Rector Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich and Chancellor Dr. Christina Reinhardt visited the DAAD-funded South African-German Centre for Development Research (SA-GER CDR) as part of an information visit of management members of German universities.

9th PhD Conference on International Development ‒ Call for Abstracts

The University of East Anglia (UEA) will host the 9th PhD Conference on International Development. It will take place in Norwich on 2‒4 September 2020 at the Julian Study Centre, UEA.

This conference represents a collaboration with several institutions in Europe; the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex; the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Erasmus University of Rotterdam (The Netherlands); the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE), Ruhr-University Bochum, the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF), Duisburg, Essen and the Institute of Political Science (IfP) (Germany). The goal of the conference is to bring together current PhD researchers, recently graduated doctoral researchers, and senior scholars in the field of International Development and allied disciplines.

Conference themes:

  1. Environmental justice, climate change and natural resources governance
  2. Politics of development: governance, civic participation, aid and institutions
  3. Economics of development: insights from behavioural, experimental economics in low and middle-income countries
  4. Education, health and social protection: socio-economic and cultural contexts and innovative policies to tackle poverty and inequality
  5. Methods and meausurement in development studies

Deadline for abstract submission is 17 April 2020.

MADM Students of the Bochum Group Graduated

On Friday, 21st of February, 13 candidates from the Bochum group of the MA in Development Management programme received their graduation certificates after having successfully defended their Master thesis during the week.

Call for Applications - Alumni Conference 2020

"Implementing the SDGs – Practical Challenges, Creative Solutions and Best Practices for Knowledge Transfer and Policy Learning"

This year’s conference will take place from 27th to 30th of July in Berlin and is hosted by the Master’s in International and Development Economics (MIDE) at HTW Berlin and organized in collaboration with the Small Enterprise Promotion and Training Programme (SEPT; University of Leipzig), and IEE’s MA in Development Management Programme. The conference is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Foreign Office (AA). Selected participants who are international alumni of the cooperating institutions therefore have the opportunity to get financial support for travel and accommodation costs.

The deadline for application at HTW Berlin is 9 March 2020. Further details regarding the application procedure are available here (PDF).

MADM Alumnus Eduardo Galindo Avilo at IEE

We are happy to welcome Eduardo back at the IEE - he was one of the students in the very first MADM intake (2000-2002). He is originally from Bolivia and currently visiting the institute for a short teaching period. The DAAD is funding his stay.

In Bolivia, he is the Chief of Staff of the Minister of Development Planning and Professor for Sustainable Development at the Private University of Bolivia.

New Members for the IEE Alumni Family

Finally, it is done! We are happy to welcome new graduates to the alumni network of the IEE. 12 candidates from the Cape Town group of the MA in Development Management (MADM) programme obtained their Master's degree. They received their graduation certificates on Saturday, 30th of November. Earlier that week, they had successfully defended their master theses on interesting topics like innovation hubs, certification of cocoa farmers, and survival strategies of street traders (just to name some of them).

Our graduates now pursue new goals. Some of them chose the opportunity to strive for a second MA degree, as it is offered by the IEE's partner institutions from the University in the Western Cape (South Africa) to the best graduates of the MADM programme. Yet, most of the graduates directly head for the practical area.

We wish our graduates all the best for their future career and trust that they will find exciting positions! We are looking forward to hear from our alumni soon.

After successful defence of her PhD Thesis on Thursday, 21 November 2019, IEE research fellow Anne Siebert has been awarded the degree of a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).

Her thesis entitled "Food Sovereignty and Urban Agriculture: Understanding Interlinkages and Exploring Implications in the South African Context" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Jun M. Borras, ISS, and Prof. Dr. Pierre Thielbörger, RUB.

The public defence was held in The Hague, and PhD has been awarded to Anne Siebert under the joint PhD agreement between the ISS and the IEE, which has been signed in 2014.

After successful defence of her doctoral thesis on Tuesday, 19 November 2019, IEE member Christina Seeger has been awarded the degree of a Doctor (Dr. rer. oec.) of the Faculty of Economics at RUB.

Her thesis with the title "Trust and consumers' willingness to pay for safe and certified safe vegetables in West African cities: A comparative analysis of Tamale, Ouagadougou, Bamenda, and Bamako" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein and Prof. Dr. Manuel Frondel. Prof. Dr. Helmut Karl chaired the oral exam.

As a central part of its alumni activities, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE; Ruhr-University Bochum) regularly organises alumni conferences in close collaboration with its partner master programmes. Against this background, the IEE hosts a conference from the 5th-8th of November 2019, titled “Evaluation of Development Interventions - Current Debates, Methods, and Best Practices” in Bochum. The conference partners are the MA programme in Development Management (MADM; IEE), the MA programme in International and Development Economics (MIDE; HTW Berlin), the Small Enterprise Promotion and Training Programme (SEPT; University of Leipzig), the MA programme in Development and Governance (Institute of Political Science (IfP); University of Duisburg-Essen), and the MA programme in International Relations and Development Policy (Institute for Development and Peace (INEF); University of Duisburg-Essen).
