With an informal opening reception on 20 November, the IEE welcomed the new intake of the PhD programme in International Development Studies (PhD IDS). The interdisciplinary, structured PhD programme was first launched in 2007.
This year, the IEE is happy to welcome four new full members of the PhD IDS programme: Ulemj Dovchin from Mongolia, Om Ki from Myanmar, Will Wright from the USA, and Katharina Girndt from Germany.
We wish all new PhD candidates much success for their doctoral studies and research projects!
Since September 2017, Ruhr-University Bochum has a new EU Careers Student Ambassador!
Benita Rose studies Development Management (M.A.) at the IEE, and is now for one year the local contact person for RUB-students of all disciplines, who are interested in a traineeship or career path with the European Union. Her tasks as EU Careers Student Ambassador include informing students about the application process to get into the EU (the so-called “Concours”), and to inform students of different study areas about possibilities and professional fields within the EU institutions.
From this week until 15th December, Professor Shelley Feldman from Cornell University will be joining the IEE as a Visiting Scholar. In her research as a sociologist, she has been working on a number of topics that have also been addressed by other IEE members, often coming from other disciplines. Her work on garment workers and the garment industry in Bangladesh as well as her research on land grabbing and displacement match research projects and interests of some IEE members.
Professor Feldman will hold presentations during the cluster sessions on "Garment Workers in Bangladesh and the Regulation of Garment Industry and Labour Markets" (8th November 2017, 10am-1pm, Room 2.25) and on "Land-Grabbing and Displacement" (13th December 2017, 10am-12noon, Room 2.25). We hope for inspiring exchanges with Prof. Feldman and warmly welcome her at the IEE.
After successful defense of her PhD Thesis on Monday, 3rd July 2017, Éva Mihalik from Makó, Hungary, has been awarded the degree of a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).
Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein, Eva Mihalik, Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Heintze, Dr. Martina Shakya
Her thesis with the title "Building Sustainable Peace: From Practice to Law de lege ferenda - Legal Assessment of the Concept ‘Post-conflict Peacebuilding’" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Heintze and Prof. Dr. Pierre Thielbörger. Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein chaired the oral exam.
The IEE Football Team won its second match in the International Football Tournament of the Welcome Center of RUB and entered the semifinal.
After the lost match against the HGI (Horst Görtz Institut für IT-Sicherheit) in the previous week the IEE team was under pressure but managed to defeat the Department of Mechanical Engineering 5-3. The goal scorers were Raffael Beier, Robin Pass, Assem Ali Lali, Volker Häring and Mohamed El-Shewy. Compared to the first match the IEE team played well-organised, showed an impressive performance in the defence against a strong opponent and is now ready to take on the Faculty of Mathematics. The match will take place on June 1.
As every year, the IEE’s PhD in International Development Studies and its partner programmes in the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR), at the University of East Anglia (School of International Development) and Erasmus University Rotterdam’s International Institute for Social Studies (ISS) will jointly organise an international PhD Conference in 2017. This year’s PhD conference will be integrated into the 15th Development Dialogue 2017, taking place from 11-13 October 2017 at The Hague, coinciding with the celebrations of the 65th Anniversary of the ISS. As usual, PhD candidates at all stages of their doctorate are welcome to attend the conference and present their research projects.
More information, including the Call for Papers, is available on the ISS website: https://www.iss.nl/research/conferences_and_seminars/development_dialogue/15th_development_dialogue/
The South African-German Centre for Development Research (SA-GER CDR) at UWC/Cape Town (South Africa) together with the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) of Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) is happy to host the international conference
"Tackling the root causes of displacement in Sub Sahara Africa"
taking place 26 November – 01 December 2017 in Cape Town/South Africa
In cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN), the Institute for Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) will be holding a conference on "Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights" from June 06-07, 2017. After the Millennium Development Goals have been very much in the focus of criticism from a human rights perspective, the conference is intended to clarify whether initial experiences with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals indicate a change of direction in this regard. The keynote speech will be held by Philip Alston, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights.
The venue is the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Bonn.
