One excursion took the students to the Hagen Open Air Museum, where they learned about the early beginnings of industrialization in the Ruhr Area, which was based not only on the discovery of coal and ore but also on traditional craftsmanship and technological innovations. The second excursion focused on the more recent history of the Ruhr Area and the on-going transformation from an industrial into a service-based economy. After learning about the development of mining technology at the German Mining Museum in Bochum, the Afghan lecturers experienced the former Zollverein Coal Mine, a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site. The excursion concluded with a visit of the exhibition "Magic Places" inside the Gasometer Oberhausen. The former gas holder, which has been converted into one of the most fascinating exhibition halls in Germany, is a striking witness of the Ruhr Area's structural change.
