2nd Degree Option

Well performing and committed students who register for the MA in Development Management of Ruhr-University Bochum can obtain a second degree of our partner University, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa. This second degree option is available for all MADM students, regardless of their study location (Bochum or Cape Town). Possible second degree options are the MA in Development Studies of the Institute for Social Development (ISD) or the Master in Public Administration of the School of Government at UWC, South Africa.

The option to obtain a second degree is also available for students of UWC who are primarily registered for the MA in Development Studies or the Master in Public Administration of UWC. Well performing and committed students of these programmes can register for the MA in Development Management of Ruhr-University Bochum for their second degree.

Requirements for registration as second degree student

  • Registration for MDS or MPA as second degree: registration is only possible if the average grade for coursework within the MA in Development Management is better than "satisfactory" (3.0) on the German grading scale. Students who did not yet complete courses at the Master's level in the MADM can be accepted as second degree students of the MDS or MPA according to the regular admission guidelines of the programmes.
  • Registration for MADM as second degree: registration is only possible if the average grade for coursework at UWC is better than "C". Students who did not yet complete courses at the Master's level at UWC can be accepted as second degree students of the MADM according to the regular admission guidelines of the programme.
  • The acceptance as second degree student will be reviewed at the end of each semester and will be extended only if the average grading for completed courses is better that 3.0 or C respectively.

Additional workload and examination requirements for second degree students

Students who wish to obtain a second degree have

  • to complete additional coursework
  • to submit a Master Thesis to both institutions according to the respective requirements
Requirements for the MA in Development Studies as second degree
  • completion of the courses "Comparative Economic Systems" and/or "Social Policy"
  • completion of the course "Analytical and Research Methods"
  • 4 elective courses from the MADM which are not counted for the final MADM grade (or only 2, if both courses "Comparative Economic Systems" and "Social Policy" have been completed.

Requirements for the Master in Public Administration as second degree

  • completion of the course "Public Policy Management"
  • completion of the course "Analytical and Research Methods"
  • one additional module, which will be fixed during studies
  • up to 4 elective courses from the MADM which are not counted for the final MADM grade

Requirements for the MA in Development Management as second degree

  • second degree students have to complete all compulsory exams of the Bochum Programme
  • the number of required elective exams for completion of the Bochum Programme can be reduced to the extent to which comparable courses of a partner programme at UWC have been completed. Recognition is only possible for courses which are not counted for the final UWC degree. The number of courses done with a partner programme at UWC for recognition within the Bochum Programme is limited to 50% of credit equivalents from elective exams of the Bochum Programme. Students have to apply for recognition of the courses with the board of examiners of the Bochum Programme
    It is not necessary to apply for registration as a second degree student with your programme application. At the beginning of your studies, an information meeting about the second degree option is held together with staff of Ruhr-University Bochum and University of the Western Cape. Only after this meeting it is possible to register as a second degree student.
