The Master of Arts in Development Management

Since winter 2000, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy has offered an international English-language Master Program in Development Management. Since May 2002, the program has also been offered at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa; originally as part of the DAAD initiative "German Programs of Study Abroad" and now as part of the DAAD funded "South African - German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice". The duration of each program cycle is three semesters (18 months). For each intake, up to 25 students are accepted in Bochum and up to 20 students in Cape Town. The next intake of the MA in Development Management is in 2012! The following links and pages explain the aims and objectives of our MA program, its organizational and formal requirements, and details addressing frequently asked questions.

Our Aim

The aim of the 18-month MA in Development Management is the training of professionals to meet the increasing need for experts in program and project management that has emerged in international development cooperation.

Alumni testimonial by M.A. Catherine Promise Biira, Uganda

"The richest experience I had was the realization that there is so much potential in people that even they themselves may not be aware of. Participating in the program unlocked so much potential in me. It gave me the drive and confidence to come this far and beyond"

The course provides the student the necessary tools to deal with the practical problems of managing development programs and projects: an introduction to theory for embedding them in a wider context, an interdisciplinary approach to methodology based on case studies for concrete analysis and the application of theoretical and methodological knowledge.

Practical Relevance

An important question often posed by potential students and applicants is: "What can I gain as additional qualification from this MA Program?"

Besides the academic qualifications we are imparting and teaching, one main characteristic of our program is its practical relevance. This starts with the internship, which is arranged by the institute , complemented with continuous career counseling, establishment of a scientific network within the Institute through Alumni Management and the integrated PhD School in International Development.

The IEE proudly states that that over 85% of our MADM graduates are now working as professionals in the field of development cooperation.
