Matthias is Professor of International Economics at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He is also a Director at the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy at Ruhr University. Before joining Ruhr University, he worked as a senior economist and head of the Programme World Economy at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWA/HWWI). From 2015 to 2018 he worked as an integrated expert at the Namibian Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development in Windhoek, Namibia. He received his Ph.D. degree and his habilitation degree in economics, both at the University of Hamburg, Germany. His research interests include international trade, foreign direct investment, institutional quality/good governance, with a strong regional focus on sub-Saharan African countries.
