Programmes

The UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies is not only one of the most important think tanks for development studies in Continental Europe. It is also offering a range of highly competitive teaching programmes at postgraduate level which reflects the Centre's interdisciplinary approach to development issues as well as the international focus.

The UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies offers five different study programmes, three at MA level, and two at PhD level:

  • MA in Development Management - MADM (IEE): English-language programme offered by the IEE since Winter 2000. For each intake 25 students are accepted to study in Bochum.
  • MA in Development and Governance - DevGov (IfP): A one-year English language programme offered at the UDE's Institute of Political Science and established in 2010. It is tailored to train young professionals from developing countries in the basics of good governance and public policy and the programme is limited to 15 participants - mostly from developing countries.
  • MA in International Relations and Development Policy - IBEP (IfP): Established in 2006 and with the general language of instruction being German. Yet, a considerable number of courses is offered in English. The program schedule runs over four semesters (24 months).
  • PhD in International Development Studies - PhD IDS (IEE): An international English-language PhD-Programme established in 2007 and implemented by the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy on behalf of the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Science, and Economics. Up to 12 PhD candidates are accepted to the program annually.
  • Doctoral Programme in Political Science (INEF): Teaching in this programme is at the present time mostly in German. The curriculum is based on a series of workshops stretching over the academic year. Workshop content is arranged on an annual basis with a focus on methodological and theoretical issues related to the research work of the participants. Themes covered in these workshops range from general questions of research design, exposé writing and field research in developing areas to specific methodologies such as process tracing, case studies, small-n analysis, QCA, discourse analysis, or nested analysis, and also includes general career issues such as publication strategies and presentation skills.
