IEE Newsletter No. 37

Newsletter 37

Dear Readers,

with the summer coming up, the IEE reviews its first half of 2023 and looks ahead to the coming months. A lot has happened, and there are many exciting events to look forward to.

The European Joint Doctorate, ADAPTED, has officially entered its third project year, and researchers are getting ready to start their fieldwork.
In this newsletter, you can read about ESR Academic Secondments. PhD student, Muhammad Saleh, who completed his secondment in Paris, gives a personal report. You can also find out about the “ideal blend of exciting research activities and interactions, and a wonderful experience of the city's rich culture and natural beauty” that five other ADAPTED researchers experienced during their secondments in Cape Town, South Africa.
Furthermore, ADAPTED is looking forward to a reunion during the EADI General Conference in July 2023, which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal.

For the MADM students, 2023 began with the 10th MADM Summer School at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The 20 students from the Bochum group headed to Cape Town to spend four weeks together with their seven fellow students from the MADM twin programme at the UWC. Read how, despite the current energy crisis, the summer school proved to be an “unforgettable and great time” for the students. MADM student, Seikhna Drammeh, also gives an interesting account of his experiences during the first semester.
As the MADM Bochum group completed their internships this year, four students - Evelyn Tique, Thin Shwe Sin Toe, Pia Becher, and Sultan Jalabi - give insight into the unique experiences they had during their various placements at development organisations.
Last but not least, this newsletter gives a short introduction to the exciting cooperation with the Mthimkhulu Village Centre and how the MADM Cape Town students could use their newly acquired skills to support the project managers in their Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) activities during the respective PME course, taught by Britta Niklas.

Now we’re looking forward to the IEE Alumni Conference, which will take place from 16th to 20th October in Bochum, and which will focus on "Development Cooperation in Times of Multiple Crises". Further insights into our activities can be found on the following pages. Enjoy this edition of the IEE Newsletter!

Sincerely,
