Scholarships

Please note that the IEE is not in a position to offer scholarships for the PhD IDS programme!

Apart from applying for the PhD IDS programme, prospective candidates without sufficient own funds are therefore expected to apply for a scholarship. While your application for the PhD IDS programme is to be submitted to the IEE, you have to apply for a scholarship at the concerned funding organisations. Please consult the following website to search for funding opportunities for doctoral studies in Germany: www.funding-guide.de

GSSP scholarships for PhD in International Development Studies in 2023 and 2024

The IEE applied successfully for the “Graduate School Scholarship Programme” (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). As a consequence we will have the opportunity to nominate two selected international applicants of the PhD in International Development Studies (PhD IDS) in 2023 and 2024 for a DAAD scholarship.

In order to apply for the PhD IDS, please use the online-platform (https://public.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/ps/iee) to submit your documents in pdf format (http://www.development-research.org/index.php/study-programmes/phd-ids/how-to-apply.html) and enter “GSSP” under “Scholarship donor” which you find under “5. Financing”. Please note: GSSP applicants must use and submit this template for academic recommendation letters.

The IEE will nominate selected international PhD IDS candidates for DAAD funding according to the following criteria:

  • Excellent academic profile
  • Graduation must have taken place no longer than six years ago prior to the nomination.
  • The applicants must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months prior to the nomination.
  • Studies with a master’s degree or equivalent must be completed at the starting date of the scholarship/preparatory German course.
  • The applicants must not have completed a PhD previously.

The scholarship includes:

  • a scholarship instalment of currently € 1,200 per month;
  • travel allowance;
  • payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover;
  • a research allowance of currently € 460 per year (for scholarship holders from countries listed in the DAC List of ODA recipients), or € 260 per year (for scholarship holders from other countries);
  • Field studies/stays abroad will be funded provided the overall period abroad does not exceed 25% of total funding period and provided that the field study/stay abroad does not take place at the beginning of your studies.

Application deadline for the PhD IDS Intake 2023 is 31 March 2023.

Only those applicants who have been selected by the IEE for a GSSP scholarship and who have been informed about their nomination, then must submit a completed scholarship application to the DAAD. Further information about the process and the documents to be submitted will be provided directly to the selected applicants. If you are interested to find out more about the GSSP programme, you can visit the DAAD website at https://www.daad.de/en/information-services-for-higher-education-institutions/further-information-on-daad-programmes/gssp/

Beyond GSSP, no scholarships are directly linked to the PhD IDS programme but candidates have to apply for funding separately. While your application for the PhD IDS programme is to be submitted to the IEE, you have to apply for a scholarship at the concerned funding organisations.
