Group of current and former PhD IDS students convened roundtable at EADI/IOB Conference in Antwerp

PhD IDS Alumni Dr. Camilo Ucros Soler and Dr. Ricardo Paris, together with the current students Oluwaseun Kuye, David Lefor and Simon Rahn, convened a roundtable at the General Conference of the European Association of Development Research and Training Insitutions (EADI) which took place from 29 June - 2 July at the Institute of Development Policy (IOB) in Antwerp, Belgium. The conference theme was "Shaping Sustainable Futures - Global Challenges, (G)local Solutions?" and the programme consisted of plenary sessions, panels, roundtables, poster presentations, and networking activities addressing key global and local development challenges.

The PhD IDS group convened the roundtable "Development Studies - Can we all get along?", in which they addressed the challenges of mutual understanding and research collaboration in the interdisciplinary field of Development Studies from the point of view of early stage researchers. Based on their own research approaches and experiences in presenting their research to diverse audiences, the group demonstrated the differences in how Development and related research problems are perceived by the disciplinary approaches all having their own epistemological and theoretical presuppositions. The discussion, which also incorporated the audience, sought to identify potential avenues for a more fruitful interdisciplinary conversation, that values the diversity of approaches in Development Studies even though they sometimes represent contrasting perspectives. Apart from their own contribution, the group had the opportunity to attend further panel and plenary sessions as well as early career workshops offered by members of the EADI consortium.
