The UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies is a collaboration project between the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE), Ruhr-University Bochum, the Institute of Political Science (IfP), University Duisburg-Essen and the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF), University Duisburg-Essen.
Major features of the Centre are the interdisciplinary approach to development issues and the international focus. Complementary specializations in political science, economics, sociology and law benefit cooperation activities in research and postgraduate teaching. Joint cooperation links with international partners have been established for the PhD Conference on International Development and the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 project EUSA_ID.

At the IEE, a number of programmes are offered or coordinated which provide various opportunities for students, researchers and other individuals or organisations interested in development research:
The Master of Arts in Development Management (MADM) is an international English-language programme. It is offered both at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, and at the South African – German Centre for Development Research at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.
The PhD in International Development Studies (PhD IDS) is an international English-language PhD programme which is implemented by the IEE in cooperation with the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Science, and Economics. It is a structured PhD programme with a strong interdisciplinary and international focus.
The IEE is the coordinator of ADAPTED, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network project funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme from 2021-2024. 15 PhD candidates are jointly supervised by the ADAPTED partners towards the award of Joint Doctorates. All research topics are related to the umbrella theme of ADAPTED "Pathways towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals"
Together with its partners at the University of the Western Cape, the School of Government and the Institute for Social Development, the IEE coordinates the South African-German Centre for Development Research at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. SA-GER CDR is one of 10 DAAD supported Centres of African Excellence and has been established in 2008.

Between 2013-2018, the IEE has been the coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 mobility project EUSA_ID. EUSA_ID has been a mobility programme which offered degree as well as non-degree seeking study, training and research periods in Europe for South African Master and PhD candidates and staff and provided European PhD candidates the opportunity to spend a research period in South Africa.
